1. Dirty Dancing (1987) This is my favourite film and this is partly due to the soundtrack. I adore 80s music and this soundtrack matches perfectly with the timeless love story in the film. It also captures the slightly rebellious teenage atmosphere of the film. My favourites are 'Stay', 'Hungry Eyes' and of course the classic '(I've had) The Time Of My Life'. 2. Moulin Rouge (2001) Baz Luhrmann is my favourite director of all time and I am not ashamed to know every word to this soundtrack. Both Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman's vocals in this film are incredible and it is both a dramatic and fun soundtrack to sing a long to. Listen to 'Elephant Love Medley' and 'Come What May' 3. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) Heath Ledger, an angsty female lead and 'I Want You To Want Me', what more could you want from a nineties teen romantic comedy. Oh yeah, a serenade... we're in luck, Heath Ledger's rendition of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' is frankly adorable. 4. Pretty In Pink (1986) This soundtrack is perfect for the whole vibe of the film. The music goes hand in hand with both Andie's teenage struggles and the other character's quirky personalities, like Duckie. With the likes of the The Smiths and songs like 'Try A Little Tenderness' and of course 'Pretty In Pink' it is a must listen (and watch). 5. The Great Gatsby (2013) This album was produced by Jay-Z and includes tracks by Lana Del Rey, The xx, will.i.am and Nero. The modern feel of this album in a 1920s setting goes perfectly with the weird and wonderful world Baz Luhrmann creates for Gatsby and Daisy. It is a combination of Hip Hop, Pop and Jazz. 6. The Perks of Being A Wallflower (2012) Just when you think you can't love this film's indie nature any more, the homecoming scene and 'Come on Eileen' makes you fall in love with the characters and their troubled friendships even more. All the songs on this album feel empowering and reflect the love, sadness and problems Charlie faces. Listen to 'It's Time' and 'Heroes' to get a feel. 7. 500 Days of Summer (2009) The most memorable scene from this film is a very happy Joseph Gordon Levitt dancing through Central Park to Hall and Oate's 'You Make My Dreams'. Along with the recurring theme of The Smiths songs, this movie includes beauties like 'Sweet Dispostion' and a lil' bit of Patrick Swayze. Most importantly Zooey Deschanel herself is featured on the album and she has a beautifully sweet indie voice to match them film. 8. The Breakfast Club (1985) There seems to be a theme of teenage angst in all these films... The Breakfast Club is full of it! This soundtrack includes 'Sunshine of Your Love' by Cream and of course 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' along with an iconic triumphant fist pump. 9. Romeo + Juliet (1996) Not only is the film a masterpiece, the soundtrack is immensely perfect. Similarly to 'The Great Gatsby', Luhrmann has forced modern songs into a traditional context to create yet another slightly twisted world. The soundtrack had two releases, firstly the popular music from the film and the second release containing the score. The first release contains songs like 'Kissing You', which became the 'love theme' for the movie, and 'Young Hearts Run Free'. 10. Back to the Future (1985) Marty Mcfly is a cool guy, especially when he busts out 'Johnny B. Goode' at his parents school dance... time travel hey?! The soundtrack to this film is just really cool and is full of those kick ass 80s vibes. When I think of the film 'The Power of Love' springs to mind instantly, it has become one of my favourite songs of all time mainly because of how it fits into the film, it just reminds me that Marty Mcfly is flipping cool and he has a time travelling Dolorian, what more could you want?! |
